Aspect Ratio

Aspect ratio is the proportion of a video's width to its height, written as W:H, such as 16:9 for YouTube or 9:16 for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts.

What is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of a video or image, written as width:height. A 16:9 video is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall, which makes it a horizontal rectangle. A 9:16 video is the same shape turned on its side, which makes it vertical.

Aspect ratio describes shape, not size. A 1280 x 720 video and a 3840 x 2160 video are both 16:9, because the proportions are the same even though the second one has far more pixels. The pixel count is resolution; the shape is aspect ratio.

How aspect ratio works

You can find a video's aspect ratio by dividing its width by its height and simplifying. For example, 1080 x 1920 simplifies to 9:16, and 1080 x 1350 simplifies to 4:5.

When a video's aspect ratio does not match the screen or player, one of three things happens:

  • Letterboxing: black bars appear above and below a wider video.
  • Pillarboxing: black bars appear on the left and right of a narrower video.
  • Cropping: the platform zooms in to fill the frame and cuts off the edges.

All three waste screen space or remove parts of your shot, which is why choosing the right ratio before you film or generate footage matters.

Common video aspect ratios

  • 16:9 (landscape): the standard for widescreen TV, laptops, and regular YouTube videos. Common sizes are 1920 x 1080 and 3840 x 2160.
  • 9:16 (vertical): the full-screen phone format used by TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Stories. The usual size is 1080 x 1920.
  • 1:1 (square): equal width and height, such as 1080 x 1080. Popular on older Instagram feeds and in feed ads because it displays well on both phone and desktop.
  • 4:5 (portrait): slightly taller than square, such as 1080 x 1350. It takes up more of a phone screen in a scrolling feed than 1:1.
  • Cinematic widescreen (about 2.39:1): the wide format used for many feature films, sometimes imitated in trailers and music videos.

Aspect ratios by platform

Aspect ratioCommon sizeWhere it is used
9:161080 x 1920TikTok, Instagram Reels and Stories, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat
16:91920 x 1080Standard YouTube videos, websites, TV, presentations
1:11080 x 1080Instagram and Facebook feed posts, feed ads, LinkedIn
4:51080 x 1350Instagram and Facebook feed posts and ads
3:41080 x 1440Instagram feed posts (supported since 2025)

Platform specs change, so treat these as the common defaults as of 2026 and check each platform's current upload guidelines before a big campaign. For example, Instagram accepts feed media from about 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait as of 2026, and its profile grid now previews posts as 3:4 rectangles, so edges of wider posts can be hidden on your profile.

Aspect ratio vs resolution

The two are often confused. Resolution is the number of pixels (for example 1080p or 4K), which controls sharpness. Aspect ratio is the shape. A 4K vertical video and a 720p vertical video share the same 9:16 aspect ratio but look very different in detail.

How to choose the right aspect ratio

  • Start with the main platform. If most viewers will watch on TikTok or Reels, shoot or generate in 9:16. If the video lives on a YouTube channel or a website, use 16:9.
  • Plan for repurposing. If you need several versions, frame the subject near the center with space around it, so you can crop a 16:9 shot into 9:16 or 1:1 without cutting off heads or text.
  • Mind the safe zones. Vertical platforms overlay captions, buttons, and usernames on the bottom and right side. Keep key text and faces away from those edges.
  • Keep it consistent. Mixing b-roll and A-roll with different ratios creates bars or awkward crops in the edit.

Why aspect ratio matters

The right aspect ratio decides how much of the screen your video occupies. A horizontal video played in a vertical feed shrinks to a thin strip in the middle, while a native 9:16 video fills the entire phone. More screen space generally means more attention, which affects how long people watch.

It also affects production. Reframing a finished video for another platform often means re-editing text, captions, and composition. Deciding the ratio up front saves that rework. Most AI video tools let you pick the aspect ratio before generating, so you can produce a vertical cut for short-form and a widescreen cut for YouTube from the same prompt.

Frequently asked questions

What aspect ratio is best for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts?

Use 9:16 vertical, typically 1080 x 1920 pixels. It fills the full phone screen on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. Keep important text and faces away from the bottom and right edges, where each app places its buttons and captions.

Is 16:9 the same as 1080p?

No. 16:9 is an aspect ratio, which describes the shape of the frame. 1080p is a resolution, which describes the pixel height. A 1920 x 1080 video happens to be both 16:9 and 1080p, but 16:9 videos also come in 720p, 1440p, and 4K.

What is the difference between 4:5 and 1:1?

1:1 is a perfect square, while 4:5 is a slightly taller portrait rectangle. On a phone feed, 4:5 takes up more vertical screen space than 1:1, which is why it is common for Instagram and Facebook feed posts and ads.
